How to Choose Materials for Plastic Prototypes?
By NICE Rapid | Jun 24 , 2016 | Tech News | 0 comments

There are many kinds of materials that can be used in prototype, and each has its different characteristics. Customers have their specific requirements on prototypes, some demanding high temperature resistant plastic prototypes, some demanding removable parts without affecting the strength, some customers requiring transparent prototype, and others needing bending prototype. So how to choose suitable materials, we hereby explain this question in detail.

In case of high temperature resistant prototype, PPS is one of the best materials among all of the plastic materials. It has the best high temperature resistant performance up to 250 degrees, which is not subjected to any deformation at the temperature of 250 degrees. Moreover, teflon also has high temperature resistant performance, but rarely used in making prototypes.

In case of removable parts in prototypes, a lot of plastic materials can be used, but it is better to use ABS because it has better bonding property. Each removed part can be assembled together with adhesives with little influence on strength.

In case of transparent prototypes, PC and acrylic can be chosen. If you need to make prototypes of high transparency, acrylic is the best choice, because its transparency is higher than that of PC, and it is more convenient to finish. Polishing of it won’t result in any crack. While polishing the edges of PC prototype is arduous, and PC prototypes are prone to cracks when steaming with chemicals.

In case of bending plastic prototypes, PP is one of the best materials, which is commonly known as "polystyrene". When it is only 0.3 mm thick, it can still be bent, and other plastic materials do not have this property.
