It is alleged that, in the past, Trump has decried manufacturing overseas and he has even been quoted as saying he wants to make it even more difficult for U.S. companies to manufacture goods outside of the country. This will probably be undertaken primarily by levying high taxes and import tariffs on companies who conduct such outsourcing, with Trump stating in his book, ’Time To Get Tough’ that, “I’m sick of always reading about outsourcing. Why aren’t we talking about ‘on-shoring’? We need to bring manufacturing jobs back home where they belong.” He has even stated that he would levy a 45% import tax on any goods that are manufactured and imported from China, although now he has won the election, this may be subject to change!
Primarily, it appears that Trump’s main source of discontent lies with Mexican manufacturing and imports into the U.S. from Mexico, however. It is also alleged that he even stopped eating Oreos, due to the manufacturer, Nabisco, relocating their factory from the U.S. to Mexico for cost-saving reasons! It is possible that a lot of the hyperbole stated in both the mainstream media and also from anti-Trump campaigners was purely rhetoric designed to destabilize Trump’s election campaign and paint him as a racist bigot. However, on a purely practical and financial level, it is unknown whether bringing manufacturing back ‘in-house’ to the U.S. would be as easy or beneficial to the economy as it sounds and time will tell if Trump is really as xenophobic as his distractors make out.
